Pack for outdoor weather, not air conditioning! We’ll post more on the weather as the day approaches, but in general August in Iowa is quite warm. Usually after dark we like to have a sweatshirt or light jacket.
Along those lines, here are some things you may want:
- mosquito protection
- umbrella or light rain coat
- sunblock
- swimming suit
Vegetarians (and other people with special dietary needs) be aware that your choices in Iowa will be somewhat limited. You’ll want to double-check anything you order in a restaurant. The famous example is the person who orders a veggie burger and gets a hamburger with lettuce and tomato on it. Packing some of your own food may be a good idea.
If you forget something, your best options will be Hy-Vee, the employee-owned, 24-hour grocery store / pharmacy chain in Iowa–or Wal-Mart, also open 24 hours. This may be obvious, but be prepared for a smaller selection of items than in, for example, Baltimore.
Wedding attire: At the rehearsal dinner, anything goes. On the farm, you probably want to wear something that can get a little dirty. Jeans and t-shirts would be appropriate.
At the wedding itself, the bridal party will be wearing suits and dresses. You definitely don’t want an evening gown or a tuxedo. If we had to describe the dress code, we’d say “somewhat formal”–but don’t worry about it too much. You may want a swimsuit and a change of clothes if you’re planning on staying into the evening with us.

No need to wear a suit jacket!? I thought since we’d be in Iowa and all, we’d just be runnin’ around in bare feet and cut-off overalls. Ha! Just kiddin.’ Can’t wait to be there!
